The messy middle

The other day I passed a building site – a massive block of flats was being torn down. The smell of dust and concrete filled the air while the digger bit out huge chunks of what had – only a couple of weeks ago - been someone’s living room. On the fence around the building site hung a picture of things to come – the new block of flats which a year or so from now will stand on this site, all shiny and nice and new.
Watching the digger munch away for a while, exposing cables and multicoloured walls as it went, I couldn’t help but think about ‘the messy bit in the middle’.
If you’ve ever painted a room, you probably know what I mean. There’s always that moment when you’ve applied that first layer of paint and the old one still shines through and it suddenly looks so much worse than it did to start with and it makes you wonder if it wouldn’t have been better to keep it as it was. The same of course is true when it comes to making changes in our lives.

Often, we start out with something that’s okay – like the old block of flats – and a vision for a better future. Unfortunately, getting from the one to the other without stirring up some dust is nearly always impossible. The best we can do then is to keep going, knowing the dust will settle and, in time, reveal what had once only existed in our imagination.
