I’m Chantal Valerie. I’m an illustrator and writer based in Amsterdam.
​
I’m inspired by stories because I believe that a good story can not only transform, enlighten, and enchant us, but also help us see things from a different perspective.

Stories act like windows to a different world – real or imagined – and my aim is to create a kind and caring world for children to enter into. A world where friendship, creativity, community, and the small pleasures in life are being celebrated.

​My illustrations express my love for nature, they are gentle and warm, but also playful and infused with a sense of humour.

​My work was first published in 2025 by the Dutch publisher Loopvis for whom I illustrated the poem Niet Alleen (Not Alone) by Tjitske Jansen. These illustrations were subsequently longlisted for the World Illustration Awards in the publishing category.

​In 2025, I was also selected for the AOI mentorship scheme. 

Animals have always played a major role in my life. From my childhood dogs who were my constant companions to my cats Momo & Mae with whom I now share my life. 

By drawing anthropomorphised animals, I want to express that we are not all that different. Animals and humans - we are all part of the natural world; we all have different personalities, feel happy and sad and everything in between and we all love to play.
